60-Year Age Limit Bill: NASS Starts A Process to Stop Tinubu, Atiku, Others From Ever Running For Presidency In Nigeria

FCT, Abuja - The House of Representatives has advanced a bill to its second reading aimed at prohibiting any Nigerian over the age of 60 from running for the presidency or governorship in Nigeria. This legislation, sponsored by Ikeagwuonu Ugochinyere, a representative from Imo State, is part of the ongoing amendments to the 1999 Constitution. The objective is to modify the eligibility criteria for key political offices.

Can President Tinubu participate in the 2027 election?

It is important to note that President Bola Tinubu, along with Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labor Party, are all potential candidates for the 2027 elections and are over 60 years of age. The proposed legislation stipulates that candidates for the presidency and governorship must be no older than 60 at the time of their candidacy. Additionally, it requires that candidates possess at least a bachelor's degree in their respective fields of study.

This proposal seeks to amend Section 131 of the Nigerian Constitution, which pertains to age limits for presidential candidates, and Section 177, which outlines the qualifications for gubernatorial candidates. What other bills are being proposed by the representatives? In addition to the age limit bill, the House of Representatives has also passed several other bills for second reading. Among these is the Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education Bill, which aims to elevate Alvan Ikoku College of Education in Imo State to the status of a federal university, sponsored by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and Rep. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere.
