Prominent PDP chieftain Dele Momodu has criticized President Bola Tinubu's declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, describing it as "anti-democratic." Tinubu had suspended Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and the state legislature for six months, citing the political crisis in the oil-rich state.
Appearing as a guest on Channels TV, Momodu, who was once in exile with Tinubu, expressed embarrassment over the president's actions. "I think it is very unfortunate... We have a pro-democracy leader in government, and yet what we are witnessing is worse than dictatorship," he said.
Momodu pleaded with Tinubu not to "kill democracy in Nigeria," saying that even those who love the president would advise him against the move. Momodu stated he has not asked Tinubu for anything, but believes the president's actions are jeopardizing the democratic gains he once fought for.
