The Nigerian labour unions have strongly condemned the federal government's declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State. In a joint statement, the unions warned that they may be forced to take "decisive action" that could disrupt national economic activities if the proclamation is not reversed within a reasonable timeframe.
The statement was signed by the Rivers State chairpersons of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and Joint Negotiation Council (JNC). The labour leaders raised concerns about the legality, economic impact, and consequences of the government's actions, describing the declaration of a state of emergency and the suspension of the elected governor, deputy governor, and state assembly members as "premature and baseless."
The unions cautioned that they would not hesitate to resort to disruptive measures if the federal government's decision is not rescinded, underscoring the high stakes and potential for a confrontation between organized labor and the government over the Rivers State crisis.
