The House of Representatives has passed 39 bills to amend the Nigerian constitution. These bills cover a wide range of issues, including judicial reforms, electoral matters, security and policing, inclusive governance, and the legislature.
Some of the key proposals in these amendment bills include:
- Establishing state and local government police forces
- Conducting all general elections (presidential, gubernatorial, National Assembly, state assemblies, and local government) simultaneously on a date set by INEC in consultation with the National Assembly
- Making the Court of Appeal the final appeal court for governorship, national, and state assembly election petitions
- Empowering the Chief Justice of Nigeria to preside over the inauguration of the National Assembly
- Creating a FCT House of Assembly
- Reserving special seats for persons with disabilities in federal, state, and local government legislative bodies
- Allowing public servants to engage in healthcare education, production, and services beyond just farming
- Establishing a political parties registration and regulatory commission
- Requiring election petition appeals to be resolved before the swearing-in of elected officials
- Giving INEC the power to conduct local government elections
- Requiring lawmakers to officially resign from their political party before defecting
The bills were passed without debate.
