Zimbabwe Stun Nigeria, South Africa Defeat Benin in 2026 World Cup Qualifiers

Zimbabwe held Nigeria to a 1-1 draw in a crucial 2026 World Cup qualifier on Tuesday, dealing a major blow to the Super Eagles' hopes of reaching the competition.

Striker Victor Osimhen put Nigeria ahead in the 74th minute, but Zimbabwe equalized late in the game to earn a hard-fought point.

The Super Eagles had been hoping to revive their World Cup dreams after a 0-2 win over Rwanda on Friday. However, their quest for victory against the Warriors of Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Akwa Ibom proved challenging.

Nigeria created a flurry of early chances but were unable to capitalize, thanks to some stout defending and profligate finishing. The home side continued to press for a winner, and their persistence paid off when Osimhen headed home Simon Moses' cross in the 74th minute to give them the lead.

But Zimbabwe fought back and snatched an equalizer in the 90th minute, leaving the Super Eagles ruing missed opportunities and dealing a significant setback to their World Cup qualification hopes.
